Fast Way to Troubleshoot Problems in Windows 8 and 8.1

toggle-button

Windows 8.x has a troubleshooting feature for system maintenance and repair that everybody should know about. A previous tip showed one quick way to access this very useful set of utilities. Here is another way that uses a single command.

In windows 8.x, a new switch has been added to the “shutdown.exe” command (previously described here). This new switch restarts the computer in what is called “advanced startup” where the screen in the first graphic below is shown.  One option on the screen is to troubleshoot.

Advanced Startup

Here is how to restart a computer in Advanced Startup using the command line:

  1. Use the keyboard shortcut Winkey+X to open the power users menu
  2. Select “Command Prompt”
  3. In the command prompt that opens, enter shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
  4. The computer will restart and the screen shown in the graphic below will be displayed.
  5. From there you can troubleshoot problems.

Create a shortcut to Advanced Startup

If you use Advanced Startup frequently, you may want to create a shortcut to go there in one step.

  1. Right-click the desktop
  2. Choose “New—Shortcut” from the context menu
  3. In the box “Type the location of the item”,  enter shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
  4. Click “Next”
  5. Name the shortcut whatever you wish
  6. Click “Finish”

And there you have it - a quick way to open the Windows 8.x troubleshooting facility

These two windows versions are annoying, I'm now using Windows 10 technical preview and it's much better.

What do you find annoying in Windows 8?

What's not in it? Modern ui, no Start menu, weird apps and slow charms bar. I'm beginner not advanced user, I think Windows 10 is for people like me. No charms bar, nice start menu with modern apps, no modern UI; simple and easy to use.

Yes, Start Menu is not there, that's a problem.. but still, work gets done. You can opt to boot straight to desktop, and after that, it's just like normal windows. I don't use apps at all.. what's the need when you have regular software for Windows. What do you mean by modern UI? I agree Windows 10 is an improvement over Windows 8, and people will like it.. and I too am looking forward to it. But, I personally did not face much problem while using Windows 8. I did miss the start menu though. Windows 10 is not ready for regular use though, still a preview. Will be sometime before it is released for general use.

I just installed Windows 10 Technical preview and it's good. You can use it too, no bugs nothing else, also many new things are here like Cortana, I'm updating to the latest build, excited now. :)

Shift + Restart is easier and quicker.

Thank you for this!!!
