Introduction
As you open more programs on a desktop, they take up more space on your screen. You will have to stack up the opened programs within a screen but that is cumbersome to manager tasks. A more productive way is to distribute opened programs into several desktops or workspaces with help of a virtual desktop manager.
Windows 10 has added Virtual Desktop or Task View feature while earlier versions of Windows did not have this much needed feature.
If you're using older versions of Windows or looking for an alternative to the Windows 10 Virtual Desktop, check out these best free virtual desktop managers.

MSVDM is no longer available (or is obsolete).
As a basic virtual desktop manager SYSINTERNALS Desktops should be mentioned. Only drawback is that it can't move apps to different desktop... Very light on resources and portable.
Dexpot is in its own league, but not everybody needs all of that.
Finestra Virtual Desktops is nice and have intuitive interface, but uses a lot of memory.
VirtuaWin is intuitive and somewhere in the middle with the resource usage. My current pick.
