Since this sounded like what I was seeking, I followed the link you provided to download and install SoftCAT Free. Much to my surprise, the company that produced it has gone out of business and the software is no longer available for download.
Following some of the recommendations here I just tried Data Crow. It is extremely unintuitive and I gave up after wasting a lot of time. First I selected the Software module and scanned a folder, but it has no concept of file type so it just added everything in the folder including html files, urls, etc. I tried to work out how to filter these and gave up. Once I worked out how to remove everything I tried to start again and could not find any way to add just exe, msi and zip files. The more I read, the more it seems that each time you delete or add a file you have to work out how to manually update Data Crow to reflect the change. I read the help and went onto their website before giving up. When I said extremely unintuitive I meant EXTREMELY unintuitive! I'll give SoftCAT a go next, but have wasted too much time to try it now.
Softcat Free version is what I have used for years. Yes you have to manually enter the data. It does as nice a job as is possible given it's antiquity (it's oldness). I am using version 1.23 which is no longer available on the website as the newer version got too fancy for me.
That visual CD program looks good. Have to give Datacrow a try too.
